Preparation for Friday's Class (12 April 2002)

Read S. LeVay, "A Difference in Hypothalamic Structure Between Heterosexual and Homosexual Men," Science, 253: 1034-1037. 1991.

To prepare for our discussion, you should read this paper three times:

  1. Read quickly. Review the paper and outline (one paper) the structure of the paper.
  2. Read in entirety and underline every word you do not understand. Email a list of these words to Dave by midnight the day before class. As you read, feel free to consult a biology book, a friend, a teacher, etc.
  3. Read one last time for comprehension.

Also on Friday we'll discuss the Carolyn Merchant piece in our anthology. Be prepared to discuss the following questions:

  1. What is Merchant's thesis?
  2. What kinds of evidence does she use in support of her thesis?
  3. Is there a relationship between her views and those of Evelyn Fox Keller in the video we saw?
  4. How are secrets and science related today?
  5. What was Bacon's vision of the new Atlantis?
  6. What is the difference between magus and scientist?
