Week One

March 29-April 2.

  • Class 1: Introduction to the course. Introductory discussion of energy, conservation of energy, and power.
  • Lab 1: Measurement and watt meters. Before lab sign up for a google account if you don't already have one. You'll need this to use google docs. We'll be using google spreadsheets throughout the class.
  • Class 2: Read Chapter 1 of SEWTHA. Bring to class a few benchmarks about population and greenhouse gas emissions.

Week Two

April 5-9.

  • Class 3: Different types of energy. Electric current. Generating electricity.
  • Lab 2: Build your own electric generator. class.
  • Class 4: More units. Different types of energy.

Week Three

April 12-15.

  • Class 5: Windpower basics
  • Lab 3: Windpower lab.
  • Class 6: More Windpower.

Week Four

April 19-23.

  • Class 7: Transportation. Overview of Coast Guard Project.
  • Lab 4: Field trip to coast guard!
  • Class 8: Transportation: people and freight.

Week Five

April 26-30.

  • Class 9: Introduction to BTUs and other units. Begin finances.
  • Lab 5: Spreadsheets and (if time) simple battery
  • Class 10: Return on Investment, Payback Time, Discounting.

Week Six

May 3-7.

  • Class 11: Introduction to BTUs and other units. Begin finances.
  • Lab 6: Spreadsheets and (if time) simple battery
  • Class 12: Return on Investment, Payback Time, Discounting.
